The legend of Buddy Bush

RJ# 14
Dear Mrs.Zrihen,
I just finished the story called The Legend Of Buddy Bush by Shelia P. Moses. This was actually a pretty good story to read and I would actually recommend this book to everyone, and that includes anyone who reads this journal.I found a passage in the book that I liked a lot it said “Grandma’s rooster that I named Felix wakes me up at 5:30, he and grandpa do not let 5:31 come around and their eyes will still be closed. Can’t believe Ma let me oversleep, on chopping days I have to be up at 5:15 not a minute later not at 5:16”.(chapter 11 pg 131)
This passage was meaningful to me because it show how important the the timing was in their family.
I used two reading strategies before the book which were predicting what it would be about. I was totally off. I also looked at the painting on the front cover to help with my prediction. I used two during reading strategies which were reading slowly to make sure I understand what's going on, and I reread parts I didn't understand. The two after reading strategies I used were scanning what I read for any unread text, and checking my prediction which didn't come true quiet yet. The genre of this book is realistic fiction, the topic of this book the title and so is the main idea which makes it implied. Their is no really essential question. The P.O.O Is time order/chronological order. The setting is both time and day,the moral of the story is to be nice to others. The story is told in first person,
The author wrote the book to entertain others. The author was biased
I would rate this book 9/10 for all the effort that was put into the book.
P.S DONT COMMENT OR ELSE......

Freedom writers

  Dear , Mrs. Zrihen

    11/22/11
I Just finished the book Freedom writers by Erin
Gruwell. It is pretty good only in the beginning when you get introduced what the topic will be about. There were two reading strategies I used before I read the book.
First I predicted based on the cover, and I looked for text features and noticed how the front cover picture was black and white. That must mean that the book is old. I also used 2 during reading strategies which were reading slowly to check the words and make sure I understand what I was reading, and rating the book as I go along. The 2 after reading strategies were reading the back so that I can figure out all the extra details that go with the main point, and checking my prediction which was wrong.
I did not like this book so much so i did not like any really specific passage that was meaningful to me, so I did not obviously, pick a passage I  enjoyed.

The genre of this book is a non-fiction memoir. The topic of this book is a short time of her life. The main idea of the story is that a student is talking about diaries she writes of her current life. The main idea is implied. Another title I would give this book would be “Writing Whenever However”. Three supporting details in the story I found were names of the people The student talked about, names of the places she went such as the school she went to, and there were different places she was talking about. The essential message in the story is I can’t really tell. A cause in the story is the teacher is losing her needs, and the effect is the student helps her. Two things that were similar in the story were that the teacher and the student were very smart people thinking wise. Two different things in the story were that their age were different. Five different text features in the book were photographs on the front and back, and italicized words. There were no more. The P.O.O. in the story is time order because she writes her diaries in. The author's purpose in the story is to inform us of an the life she had. The author's perspective is biased. The author's point of view is 1st person because it is a memoir. I could not find any figurative language. My book can not be traced to a source for it is a memoir and can only be traced to the author. Some vocabulary I learned was not that much. This book relates to me because I am generous also. This book relates to a book I read in the summer of 2010. This book also relates to the world because people like teachers and students can get a close relationship.
I would give this book a 3 out of 10 because it had tons of curse word and not only that it was boring.

To:whom it may concern  Bar Peretz 702   RJ#12
I am currently in the middle of reading The Freedom Writers by Erin Gruwell. This book is okay up until now I am not that pleased with how the author wrote this book so I would not really recommend this to anybody. I think this book is good on the other hand because it talks about some interesting things that happened in real life to people I think that is what is good in the book and if you like those thing with events that happen in real life coming from someones point of view then I would recommend this book to you.
A passage that came  in my mind a lot was on page 151.
“ I think Rosa Parks made a big difference in segregation first of all she came on the bus after a hard day of work and refused to give up her seat to a white person. I think that she did the right thing because maybe without her we maybe would not have gained equal rights including other people that took place in the civil right movement.”
This passage is really meaningful to me because I think that every person can make a real difference in the world and this is exactly what I personally thought this passage said when I read it while reading the book.
I used 2 strategies before reading the book I made a prediction, I saw if this book was awarded.  During reading I reread it many times until I got it right. I used another strategy, which was to find any word that I couldn't understand, so I used context clues.  After reading I did some inferences on the book to see what I understood about the book, and also I asked me some questions to see if I understand what I read.
The genre of this book is Memoir because it talks about a memory that happens, the topic of this book is life events, the main idea of this book is the diaries she writes it is implied main idea because it does not say it. Another title for this book is “diary by diary.” A supporting detail would be she write really good diaries which is sensory. Their is no really an essential message nor any causes and effect because it is a diary.
I found some text features like the italics to emphasize the word so the reader can notice. Also there are the spaces between paragraphs that represent that a few days were passed or a subject is changed.
The pattern of organization is time order because it was actually the time between the beginning of the memory and the end. The author wrote this book to share an experience with the reader. The author's perspective is biased. The angle in which the story was told was in first person for its saying “I”, “me”, and “I” and it is talking about himself. I couldn't find any figurative language in this story.
I would rate this book for now a 4/10 because it is not that really good.

Curent event 2

Date: 11/13/11
Name: Bar Peretz
Title: A legacy of service: Three generations of Pines family have served in military
Author: Perry Stein
Source: The Miami Herald
The topic of the article is all about loyalty
The main idea of the article is: Bolivar Perez Rios he was a great soldier in many wars and he was awarded, he passed down his talents to three more generations. (implied)
The author’s purpose for writing this article is to give an inform us of one military soldier who has served his country very well.
The author’s perspective in this article is subjective (biased) because he is talking about
only one soldier in the army and his perspective.
The pattern of organization of the article is flashback.
The reason the author chose this pattern for the article is because it was talking about Bolivar’s life back in the day and how he served in the army from a young age.
The text features included in the article are: Illustrations helped me by letting the reader know who Bolivar is and his generations. Subtitles, this helps by letting the reader know which person is which.
This article is about (a summary in your own words) the different generations of Bolivar, a Puerto Rican soldier, who helped in the army and received many prizes like the blue heart, and the bronze star. He inspired his children, grandchildren, and soon his great grandchildren.
The significance (importance) of this article is that it lets you know how a Hispanic person helped in many wars, and this was just one person.
What I learned from this article is if you are good at something like at war, you might be able to influence other people because of your respect to the country.
What I liked about this article is that it gave an example of someone that was celebrated in veteran’s day.
What I did not like about it was really nothing it entertained me a lot.
Who should read this article and why: people who want to know about some people who helped in wars and all of that they should read this article because it gave the example of Bolivar helping in war ever since World War 2
This article reminds me of (text-to-self) how I respect my country, Israel, and the country I am now living in, U.S.
(Text-to-text) I cannot really relate this to any book.
(text to world) It relates tto people who had just had a life like his and are his age in the real world.

The Appearance

   RJ # 11
Dear Mrs. Zrihen I just finished the short story called The Appearance by Kate Lubrigacy. Although this story is very short it had some pretty weird events that happen in a regular chapter book. I thought this book was a little scary so if you are the kind of person that wants to read a short story that is scary I recommend this to you. This book was scary but at the same time very spooky like things you will ask while reading this book is
what will happen ? That is crazy? Why did he do that? Just by looking at these questions you can see how haunted the book is.
The first strategy I used before I started this book was I skim and scanned for text features. The other strategy I used before starting the story was to predict what was going to happen and I predicted that this story was going to be about the author writing about a tale being told that might have been interested to her. After I read the first few paragraphs and went to the second page I used other strategies like to confirm my prediction I made before and it was correct, but too general for this story. The other strategy was to reread parts for any kind of reason, maybe I didn't understand it or I just want to read it many times. When I was done I, first asked some questions about what had happened in the story, like what was the conflict, where did it happen, ETC.
The foil character is the firefighter who takes place in the book not so many times. There is no protagonist the author is the main antagonist talking about the person who was appearing at the girls house every week that was why it was called the appearance. The characters in the story are not dynamic they are flat because it is a short story. The conflict in this book is that everyday the girl comes home and she sees and hears noises coming from a person that is in her house and she lives in a town were not that much people live out of the city she is
very unpopular and does not have many friends. The conflict is Man vs. Man, and their is no weather conditions at all that are discussed in the story. The rising action is when the girl realizes  that their is noise in her house, the climax is when she tries to investigate who is at her house, the resolution is when there are noises coming from the vent and their is really nobody at her house she was officially going crazy according to the author.
The genre of the story is short story fiction because it only has one plot, one conflict, and mostly one of everything. The setting is in a house. I don't know the theme and I don't think there's a moral. The point of view in this story is first person because the author is talking about herself.  The author organized this book into time order because it is going through time. Edgar wrote this story to entertain the reader or maybe share. I couldn't find any figurative language and the perspective.
I would rate this book a 10/10 because it was the  best short story I have ever read.

Bites

RJ #10 DATE:11/1/11 CLASS:
702
Dear Mrs.Zrihen, I have just finished the book Bites.
It is a good book although it has its pros and cons just like every book has. I did not like this book a lot although I like some parts of this book. I don’t really recommend this book to anyone if you want to read a mystery. I would rate this book a 6 out of 10 because it was really boring but it had some good parts.
The strategies I used before reading this book was to skim and scan for text features, and what I found were that at the end of each chapter there was bold font, which I think meant that the author was talking about the present while most of the book takes place during the. Another strategy I used before reading the book was to figure out why I was reading this book for. The strategies I used during reading this book were to check for context clues for words I didn't know, I don't remember any right now. The other strategy I used was to predict what would happen later on in the book. After I read the book I used some strategies like to ask myself what the book was about. Another strategy I used was to find out who I might recommend this book to, I would not recommend this book to anybody really only people that like intense mystery’s because it is not very interesting at all.
A PASSAGGE THAT I PICKED WAS ON PAGE 27
“This was what the boy expected all he expected he was not just that kind of kid that did it all he had to try it all in order for him to gain it all,. And it was simple as that”
I think this passage was very meaningful because it was very interesting with all the wording said multiple times in order to fix it to a higher grade.
The genre is fiction and the sub-genre is mystery because there's a problem to be solved. The protagonist is Tyler and the antagonist is Rudy The foil is the taxi driver, the setting is in California in a town doesn't really say where the social and weather conditions are unknown, the conflict is man vs. man. The tone is mysterious and the mood is exciting. The theme is partnership. I don't think there's a moral. The P.O.O is time order because it is going from today to tomorrow and the clue words, next, after, ETC. The point of view is third person because of the clue words, him, her, and them. The author's purpose is to entertain the reader and I don't think there's a perspective.
